Generating a CSR from an IIS server

To generate your SSL certificate you first have to generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) to link your certificate to the server where your website is located.

  1. Log onto your server
  2. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on your server
    • The IIS Manager program will be split into three sections:
      • Connections are on the left
      • The main screen is in the center
      • Actions are on the right
  3. Click on your server name under the Connections section
  4. On the main screen click on the Server Certificates icon
  5. In the Actions section click on “Create a certificate signing request”
  6. Enter your Certificate Signing Request (CSR) information into the boxes provided
    • Common Name
      • The domain name of your site. One of:
        • domain.com
        • www.domain.com
        • *.domain.com for wildcard certificates
    • Organization Name
    • Organizational Unit Name
      • The department of the company
    • Locality Name
      • City where your company is located
    • State or Province Name
    • Country Name
  7. Select a Key Bit/Length Size of 2048
  8. Save it to your computer to use when generating your SSL certificate
